after my st. mary's lake trip I learned that smallies can be very selective, or even more selective than trouts. there are three other families there all using spinning gears with lures or bait, including my girlfriend whom i gave a spinning rod with spoons/ spinners/ crankbaits, and several other anglers near the resort. Fact is none of them caught any bass! they did hit quite a few small cutthroats, around 6"-10", but most fish I see were hitting on major chironomid hatch. I caught fish after fish with a size 14 green bugger pattern, and the next morning just briefly b4 pack up, i switched to a black one which is very close to the chironomid hatch (i tried to match the shuck floating on the water, close to size 10 even size 8, none of the chironomid pattern i brought is that big), and gee, i hit 8 within half an hr, literally one fish every cast! They did put a really good fight on a 3wt fly rod. just my two cents

thanks for the info ! if you really wanna slay the dinksters,u should try a housefly pattern.works great!and when i fish my housefly i usually make a buzzing sound ,like....buzzzzzzzzz ! you know ,to attract the fish. the last time i was there i saw some guys in a boat land a couple nice fish in the 4 lb range on a tube and some other creature bait......screw that! i got my housefly and lots more fingerlings to catch! sike

so you don't agree that big fish takes small prey as well?

I suspected that bass might have an interest in chironomids. I know crappies do.

in this case I am quite sure it is the smallmouth, but i guess anything smaller than 5lb are consider as dinks for some trophy bass hunters

but being an ultralight member, there are several forum members catch some decent size lunkers on 3wt elsewhere

they didn't throw any small patterns in the videos.

As far as I know, lakes and rivers are very different in terms of chironomid hatch, the one in the lake tend to be bigger, size 8 even size 6 hook size, in rivers or stream they tend to be smaller as in size 20 and under, not sure if u can catch one on a size 20 chironomid pattern.

Very Happy It can be a little confusing as a "Bomber" can refer to an Atlantic salmon fly that' made the trip out west for steelhead.

But in discussions about chironomids , bombers usually refer to the largest of the chironomid clan also called duck flies in some places.

The bombers, I was referring to are a subspecies of the chironomid (insect). I have observed adults up to an inch in length. Use a Doc Spratley tied to a #4 or #6 streamer (hook), and clip the wing short, for a good imitation.

anybody who fishes for bass ,and releases all fish UNHARMED has my respect !!!!when i was a kid i would use night crawlers and bank fish for whatever bit my worm.i didnt care whether it was a catfish, trout, bass, carp, bluegill, etc. ,but it only took me a couple trips out to notice that the bass were the most fun !the cats would swallow bait and lock there mouths shut and sting you with there wiskers, the trout were to finicky and fragile.the bluegill were to small, and the carp were gross.the bass were built like a tank, easy to handle, they were in almost every body of water[in california they are everywhere],and they could be caught on a wide range of artificials, which meant 'no more dirty hands'.also they love shallow water which makes them fun to sightfish. since i cant stand the taste of fish,i never kept any,and would be pissed off when even accidentally throaghting a bass[to the point of debating even if i should fish].one reason[other than catching big fish]i like big lures is they are typicaly easy to remove.my point here is bass are special[in my opinion] and should be released allways even when its legal to 'kill' them.........plus 1 of the best parts of bass fishing ,is watching them swim away[after 2 pics and a quick weigh-in 'if' its a hawg].as far as fly vs. spin,we are all basically after the same thing,we just have different tools in our tool box...... good luck on the water!!!

It seem to be less persuasive when you are speaking for the respect of bass but also being less respective to other fish. Carps can also be found in many different water as well as can be caught on a variety of baits/lures, and it is also fun and hard to sightfish for them. check out jay zimmerman's clips on youtube, he is a carp fly specialist from colorado. Don't forget they are the major game fish in UK and western Europe.

bigger artificial are easier to remove than the smaller ones? in my case there are no fish deeply hooked, and very rarely fish are deeply hooked when fly fishing, even fly fishing for cat fish (yes, don't be surprised, there are ppl fly fishing for cats)

first off ,i never said that i didnt respect other fish ,i said that i chose not to target them[and why]! second if you doubt my respect for bass than u are an idiot ! third ,you can go on the web and find anything that you want to post..........doesnt mean shit! ive seen catfish caught on plastic worms and other lures.....deosnt mean i want to catch them...........and im definataly not going to post vids of it!about the carp?ive caught them before and i could care less whats popular in the uk. grasshoppers are a delicasy in some countries, but that doesnt make me want to eat them! as far as the hook goes ,i dont care how fast you are,if you catch enough big bass ,one or more of them will inhale your fly!how many largemouths have you caught in your life?both of your fist will fit [at the same time]into the mouth of a 10 lb bass and they reach 20[in warmer climates].

you just previously stated that, "carp were gross", can you say it is appreciation? how would you want ppl to read your respect?

I am not a trophy bass hunter like you targeting exclusively for 10lb+ bass, and I am not interested in fist in mouth, but the same question goes back to you, how many fish have you caught on fly or seen that are deeply hooked by fly fishermen?

I post these videos just to share for those who did not know much about warmwater fly fishing, but for those who do not appreciate, I cannot change their mind and manner. G

carp 'are' gross looking to me,so what ?deosnt mean that i dont like them or have anything against them .i feel no different for a carp in the water as a bird in a tree.im not trying to catch either one.as far as size, i never said i only hunt 10 lb bass, i use the same lures as other bass anglers.i used 10 lbs as an example because it 'is' possible to catch a 10 pounder 'here'.and the fist analogy was to give you an idea of how big the mouth is.so if i am wrong then i want to see u post this "bass NEVER swollow a fly".i dont watch fly fisherman catch big bass so im not positive, but apperently you are.im getting tired of having to explain everything i say to 1 dipshit, but instead of answering the qeustions i first asked, you will misunderstand all my points ,twist everything around and come back with nothing informative and more lame qeustions to something i didnt "actually say"for example "i only fish for 10 lb bass, you said that.....not me? responding to you is a waist of time.........unless you want to box?
