Weekly Fraser Valley Sport fishing column; Jan 13 to 20, 2014

I recently listened to a five-year-old as he told me about going fishing and not even getting a bite. I asked him how long he fished. With bright eyes and a dead serious look, he explained, “I fished five minutes and didn’t catch anything.” Jimmy Houston from his book, Catch of the Day.

We all laugh when we read that passage; yet how many of us began fishing thinking it would be a whole lot easier than it is. I often wonder if some of us do ourselves a dis-service by setting the bar too high, with all the raving about our exceptional catches and embellishing all the others. To be fair to those following us, we need to explain that while we all strive for the perfection of a fish every cast, such perfection is seldom achieved. A preacher friend of mine addresses this subject with a story about a group of professional fishermen.

Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”

‘We’ll come too,” they all said.

So they went out in a boat, but they caught nothing all night.

Fishing is a challenge, a challenge to our ability to outwit a fish. The truth is; we only catch the dumb ones.

The Report

With record warm afternoons in the forecast for the rest of this week, fishing on our lower mainland lakes is going to be great. Concentrate on the north east sections of your favorite lake with a slow troll or retrieve. Try: Wooly Bugger, Big Black, Micro Leach, Baggy Shrimp, Dragonfly Nymph, or Halfback Nymph. Afternoon dry (floating) fly is in the mix too; try: Lady McConnell, Tom Thumb, Griffith Gnat, Black Gnat, Renegade, Irristible or Elk Hair Caddis.

The Fraser River is fishing is good for Dolly Varden and cutthroat. For Cutthroat try: Professor, Anderson Stone, American Coachman, Rolled Muddler, Black Gnat, Griffith Gnat, Zulu, Hares Ear, Renegade, or Irresistible. For Dolly Varden try: Zonker, Flat Black, Big Black, Eggo, Clouser's Deep Minnow, Bucktail, and Lefty's Deceiver.

The Vedder River is good for Dolly Varden, rainbow, and steelhead. For rainbow try: Czech nymph, Kaufmann Stone, Hares Ear, Big Black, Wooly Bugger, Eggo, Zulu, Soubou, Irresistible, Elk Hair Caddis, Tom Thumb, Black Gnat, or Renegade. I have been arguing this very point (winter Rainbow fishing) with some of my "very experienced" fishing friends and telling them that it is a great time to get out this winter as our lakes are in a very fishable contidition. But I keep being told that I have rock in my head and that don't you know, it's Stealhead season??? Well I have held all 4 western drivers licences and have fished for rainbows in a lot colder conditions than we get here quite successfully.

My issue is that I believe in the buddy system for fishing the backcountry (I am a Safety Officer for day-job) and right now I only get 1 day a week off so if my buds will only stomp along the "Freakin Vedder" for stealhead, I end up workin the "honey-do list" on my precious Sundays. So if anyone reading Newsman's artice wants to head out to one of these local "lower preasure" lakes and has a pontoon, send me a note. I have a pontoon with an elec motor but I feel bad when I get to work the lake as a whole and my partner can only beat the banks (kinda seen as "bad form"). Also I have a jacked up Bronco2 that affords us acces to the less trodden lakes.

Well guys, once again I am off to do more chores off the honey-do list and walk depressingly past my fishing gear while I look longingly at it....

I don't even waste my time steelheading this side of the border unless I have some-one who really wants to go. There are just to few of those searun rainbows on this side of the 49th. Not that they don't do well here; it is all about elitist politics. Here the policy is anti hatchery enhancement, while our American friends are pro enhancement.
Here we offer retention of 1 maybe 2 hatchery fish in select fisheries, down south it is four fish with  mandatory hatchery fish retention. In fact their steelhead fishery is so good they have comercial steelhead openings (now you know where the steelhead in Safeway come from).

As for winter rainbow fishing, you are right it is good here. No need to go off road, just ask Andy. As for guys to fish for you come out to our next club meeting. Our club has been in a slump for the past three years, but with the new blood that showed up for last night's meeting prospects look good for this year.
